My Mom got my sisters and I one of the coolest gifts for Christmas last year. A three month subscription to Homegrown Collective. If you haven’t heard about them, it’s a subscription box that is sent to your door every month containing seasonably appropriate kits that help you to live more self sufficient and sustainably. Everything is practical and useful (which is a win if you’re trying to live more simply like we are!).
I looked up some of their previous boxes and they had stuff like a Kumbocha kit, Salt of the Earth (bath salts, salt preservation), The Beauty of Coconut (lip balm, lotion bars, sugar scrub) and so many other awesome ones. Each Greenbox comes with everything you’ll need and any instructions for each of the items you can make.
I got my January box and it was the Home Remedies & Cure-Alls Greenbox, which came at a perfect time for us. Jordan had just come down with a nasty cold so we tested some of the remedies on him.
What it Included
The kit included ingredients to make homemade vapor rub and salve, cough and cold syrup, tinctures, teas and essential oils. The little instruction sheets that came with it included all kinds of neat information on the herbs and essentials oils and what they’re good for.
What Was Included
- St. Johns Wart
- Anise essential oil
- Menthol essential oil
- Olive oil
- Fresh Ginger
- Cinnamon stick
- Salve jar
- Glass jar
- 2 tincture bottles
- Press and seal tea bags
What I Needed to Provide
The kit didn’t included EVERYTHING, but it was pretty darn close. The two things I needed to complete every remedy in the kit were,
- vodka for the tinctures
Making the Remedies
Noah helped me make the vapor rub and the cough and cold syrup for Jordan.
The vapor rub was made with olive oil, wax and essential oils. We melted everything together and then poured into the little provided container. It was super easy and Jordan said it help with his congestion right away.
Cough and Cold Syrup
The cough syrup took a little bit more effort, but was still pretty darn easy. We combined the selected herbs and ginger and reduced it to about half. Then we strained it, added some honey (which was not provided) and then poured it into a jar. The verdict: Jordan said it helped his throat feel better right away.
He also was only sick for a couple of days compared to his friend who was sick over a week. So I’d say it was win.
Love, love, love this subscription service. I love the fact that it’s something practical that I can use for my family to help us live healthier more self-sustainable lives. Noah loved helping me put together the remedies in this kit and it was especially helpful that we had everything ready and he just had to help me measure and pour.
The quality was great too. I wouldn’t say the little press or the strainer were top quality but the herbs, oils and wax were.
I know I can’t wait to see what the next two boxes are going to be!
