Now that I’ve written out several posts on capsule wardrobes, I figured it might be helpful to see how I organize everything that I have listed on my Kid’s Capsule Wardrobe Checklist. Especially since I tend to buy things in advance.
This is the system I found that works best for our family, our space and our season in life. It might not work for you, but I always find it helpful to see how other people do things.
We store both kid’s clothes in Noah’s room right now. Each kid has one drawer for clothes, a section on a lower hanging closet rack and a drawer or two for underwear, socks, tights, and ties.
Each kid has the current season’s clothes in their own drawer. We have a four drawer dresser with the top two drawers holding cloth diapers and the bottom two holding the kids clothes. Hailey has the bottom one and Noah has the one right above that.
I fold everything like this, it seems to help the kids see everything better. I always keep pants/shorts/swim suits in the back row and tops/dress/pj’s in the front row.
Noah is able to skim quickly, grab what he needs and doesn’t feel the need to dump everything out.
Hailey is still in the stage where she changes a million times a day (does that ever end?) so her drawer doesn’t’ always stay as neat and tidy.
This room is so tiny, it’s really hard to get a good picture of the closet. But here it is, in all it’s tiny glory.
I’ve got plans to build or install some closet organizers to better utilize this space. But for now, this is what we’ve got to work with.
On the lower level, I store all the kids current season dress clothes. Noah’s stuff is on the left and Hailey’s is on the right side of the bar.
And we’ve got my old Rubbermaid drawers from college to store socks, underwear and tights. Hailey gets the top drawer and Noah has the bottom two.
Since I purchase clothing ahead of time during end of season sales, I like to keep it all hanging up in the closet. I found that if I put it in a tote, I would forget about what I had or didn’t have.
This system combined with my checklist (which I keep in my purse) helps me stay on top of what I still need to buy.
I store it from the upcoming season to the season after that (so I have Fall/Winter and then to the right of that I have Spring/Summer for next year). I’ve found it helpful to keep all the shirts together, all the pants together etc. I can skim more quickly.
Noah’s is always on the left and Hailey’s is to the right, following the same pattern of organization.
I’ve also got future size shoes, socks and underwear on the upper shelf. I need to figure out a better shelving system to organize those, but at least it’s all where I can find it.
Stuff they’ve grown out of I keep in a tote. I like to use those vacuum seal bags to help keep out any moths. I’ve started selling the majority of Noah’s clothing.
Mostly because elastic won’t last long enough for us to have another kid in that size and I’d rather have money for it now than have it go to waste.
Hailey I’m still keeping a few things since a two years from now (if we were to have another girl) those clothes would still be okay.
How do you organize your kids clothes? Do you have a system that works for you?
