I’m just going to jump right in here and say that there are few things worse than an irrationally hangry (hungry AND angry) child.
You know, where they’re so hungry and hysterical that they won’t even eat. And you spend 2 hours begging them to just eat anything. ANYTHING.
Eat this slice of cheese.NO….okay uhhh how about raisins, grapes or a slice of turkey? Here, I found this half eaten granola bar in my purse? This crushed M&M from who knows when?
As I’M sure you’ve figured out by now, you just don’t ever let them get that hungry. Once that blood sugar drops, there’s just no reasoning with them.
So we have a preventative plan in place for our days. We eat breakfast first thing in the morning. We eat a snack RIGHT after nap time. And then another snack right before bed (because, you know they’ll wake up at 1,3 and 5am hungry if you don’t).
And you know what I include in most of our snacks? Peanut Butter.
It’s such a versatile protein that I can mix into all kinds of things for the kids. Cookies, PB&J,peanut butter and apples, and protein balls just to name a few.
Their latest request has been toast with a little bit of almond butter, a sliced banana and a drizzle of honey on top.
That little bit of protein helps regulate they’re blood sugar and keep things going a little more smoothly (in the hangry department, anyway).
Once Again Nut Butters
I just found Once Again Nut Butters and I was intrigued. I skimmed the label (as I always do) and saw that this brand is all kinds of good. And the label would make any crunchy Momma’s heart happy:
- Simple ingredients
- Gluten Free
- Certified Non-GMO
- Certified Organic
- Paleo (in the case of the Almond, Sunflower, and Cash Butters)
- They follow the Fair Trade and Sustainability of their farm partners and suppliers
We did a big taste testing with their Sunflower, Cashew, Almond and Peanut Butter the other day.
The kids LOVED the Almond Butter (which was literally just milled, dry roasted almonds and nothing else) and the Peanut Butter. I really loved the creaminess of the Cashew Butter.
The Sunflower butter was good, but not our favorite. If you had a peanut allergy and you could only have sunflower butter, I think it would be a good substituted. But we preferred the other three.
Overall, I was impressed. We don’t normally buy anything but peanut butter and I enjoyed mixing it up bit with our sampling.
As for where to find it, it’s in most grocery stores. I know I’ve seen this brand on sale quite a bit at Sprouts. And you can follow Once Again online for coupons and other offers at their website, Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest or Instagram accounts.
Do you have any favorite snacks to keep the hangry child at bay?
